Biography
Daniele Rustioni, 42, is one of the most compelling conductors of his generation and is a major presence with the leading international symphony orchestras, opera houses and festivals.
He is Principal Guest Conductor of the Metropolitan Opera House in New York, Principal Guest Conductor of the Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra, Music Director Emeritus of the Opéra National de Lyon, Music Director Laureate of the Ulster Orchestra, and Conductor Emeritus of the Orchestra della Toscana in Florence.
Highlights of the 2025 – 2026 season include debuts with Orchestre National de France at the Philharmonie de Paris, The Cleveland Orchestra at Severance Music Center, San Francisco Symphony, Dallas Symphony, Seattle Symphony, Enescu Philharmonic at Romanian Athenaeum, Orchestra del Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, Orchestra del Teatro alla Scala, the Vienna State Opera with a new production of Bizet’s Les Pêcheurs de perles, the Shanghai Grand Theater leading the Bavarian State Opera on tour with Verdi’s Otello, and the Herkulessaal der Münchner Residenz conducting Richard Strauss’ Ariadne auf Naxos. He returns to the Pittsburgh Symphony, BBC Symphony, Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony, Philharmonia Zürich, the Opernfestspiele at the Bavarian State Opera with Weber’s Der Freischütz, the Aix-en-Provence Festival with Verdi’s Les vêpres siciliennes and the Teatro alla Scala with a new production of Gounod’s Faust. In September 2025 he replaced Zubin Mehta in the inaugural concert of the Respighi Festival in Bologna with Stravinsky’s Le Sacre du printemps and Respighi’s Fountains and Pines of Rome.

Rustioni is a regular presence on the podiums of the world’s leading orchestras. In recent seasons he has guest conducted throughout North America, Europe, U.K., and Asia making many notable debuts including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Philharmonia Orchestra, Bayerisches Staatsorchester, Orchestra dell’Accademia Sinfonica Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, the Met Orchestra at Carnegie Hall, New York Philharmonic, the Philadelphia Orchestra, The Cleveland Orchestra at Blossom Music Center, Los Angeles Philharmonic at Hollywood Bowl, London Philharmonic, City of Birmingham Symphony, The Hallé Orchestra, BBC Philharmonic, Scottish Chamber Orchestra, St Petersburg Philharmonic, Helsinki Philharmonic, Swedish Radio Symphony, Danish National Symphony, Philharmonique de Monte-Carlo, Gürzenich-Orchester Köln, Staatsorchester Stuttgart, Netherlands Philharmonic at Het Concertgebouw, Belgian National Orchestra, Luxembourg Philharmonic, Barcelona Symphony Orchestra (OBC), Orchestra Sinfonica Nazionale della RAI and the Filarmonica della Scala. Rustioni has made regular appearances in Japan since his debut conducting Madama Butterfly at the Nikikai Opera in 2014, followed by Tosca and critically acclaimed symphonic concerts with the Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra, Kyushu Symphony Orchestra, HPAC Symphony, Osaka Philharmonic and the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra.
He has led performances at the nearly all of the most important international opera houses and festivals worldwide, including the Salzburg Festival, Aix-en-Provence, BBC Proms, Bavarian State Opera (Munich), Berlin State Opera, Opèra National de Paris, Théâtre des Champs-Elysées, Royal Opera House-Covent Garden, Dutch National Opera (Amsterdam), Teatro Real (Madrid), Palau des Arts (Valencia), Zürich Opera House and the Teatro alla Scala. In Italy, his homeland, he has also conducted at Maggio Musicale Fiorentino Festival (Florence), Opera di Roma, Gran Teatro La Fenice (Venice), Arena di Verona Festival, Rossini Opera Festival (Pesaro) and Teatro San Carlo (Naples). In 2022, the International Opera Awards named him “Best Conductor”. His opera repertoire numbers over 70 different works already conducted spanning over centuries and ranging from Italian to French, German to Russian, and more.
The Metropolitan Opera has been an important part of Rustioni’s artistic life since his debut in 2017 with Aida. In November 2024, he was appointed as the third Principal Guest Conductor of the legendary opera house in New York beginning with the 2025 – 2026 season, following the footsteps of his predecessors Valery Gergiev and Fabio Luisi. Most recently, he led the new production of Carmen at New Year’s Eve Gala followed by performances in January 2024. He has also led performances of Falstaff, Le nozze di Figaro, and a new production of Rigoletto. He made his symphonic debut with the Met Orchestra in February 2023. Future plans include performances of Don Giovanni, La bohème, Andrea Chènier (part of the Met opera live in HD season in cinemas), new operatic productions, the world premiere of a contemporary creation, and symphonic programmes with the Met Orchestra at Carnegie Hall.
In 2025 Rustioni concluded his tenure as Music Director of Opéra National de Lyon after eight seasons. In addition to more than thirty opera titles and symphonic concerts, Rustioni and the Opéra de Lyon toured internationally and gave regular performances at the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées in Paris as well as at the Aix-en-Provence, Berlioz Cote-St Andre, La Chaise-Dieu, and Chorégie d’Orange International Summer Festivals. In July 2024 Maestro Rustioni received the ‘Chevalier des Arts et Lettres’ of the French Republic for his cultural services, and he was appointed the first-ever ‘Directeur Musicale Emérite’ of the Opera company in Lyon.
In 2024, Rustioni completed his five years tenure as Music Director of the Ulster Orchestra which he repositioned within the orchestral firmament in the UK with successful concerts at the BBC PROMS, international tournée and recordings of contemporary symphonic music. He was Principal Guest Conductor (‘Erstergastdirigent’) of the Bavarian State Opera till October 2023, a position created especially for him for the first time in the history of this iconic German Opera House. He was Music Director of the Orchestra della Toscana from 2014 to 2020 and served as Artistic Director until January 2023.
Rustioni’s most recent recording was Aigul Akhmetshina’s debut album on Decca. His discography includes a variety repertoire for Deutsche Grammophon, Dynamic, Unitel, Opus Arte, Naxos, Opera Rara. His monographic recordings to rediscover Italian symphonic composers of the 20th century on Sony Classical received critical acclaim. In 2022, Naxos released the recording of Rimsky-Korsakov’s The Golden Cockerel directed by Barrie Kosky at the Opéra National de Lyon.
Rustioni was born in Milan and began his career in 1993 as a member of Teatro alla Scala’s children’s chorus. He continued his studies at the Milan Conservatory “G.Verdi” (where he graduated in Organ, Piano, Composition and Orchestral Conducting), La Scala Academy (as a répétiteur), Sienna’s Accademia Musicale Chigiana (Diploma d’Onore in Conducting) and London’s Royal Academy of Music (AssociateRAM). He resides in London with his wife violinist Francesca Dego and their daughter.

Farà il suo ritorno all'Opernfestspiele dell’Opera di Stato Bavarese con Der Freischütz di Weber, il Festival di Aix-en-Provence con Les vêpres siciliennes di Verdi e al Teatro alla Scala con una nuova produzione del Faust di Gounod. Ha sostituito il Maestro Zubin Mehta nel concerto inaugurale del Festival Respighi di Bologna nel settembre del 2025, dirigendo Le Sacre du printemps di Stravinsky e i due poemi sinfonici più rappresentativi di Ottorino Respighi: Le fontane di Roma e I pini di Roma.

Ha diretto in quasi tutti i più importanti teatri d'opera e festival internazionali, tra cui il Festival di Aix-en-Provence, BBC Proms, Bayerische Staatsoper di Monaco, Staatsoper di Berlino, Dutch National Opera di Amsterdam, Opéra National de Paris, Théâtre des Champs-Élysées, Royal Opera House-Covent Garden di Londra, Festival di Salisburgo, Teatro Real di Madrid, Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía di Valencia, Opernhaus di Zurigo e il Teatro alla Scala. In Italia ha diretto anche al Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, Teatro dell’Opera di Roma, Gran Teatro La Fenice di Venezia, Teatro Regio di Torino, Teatro Comunale di Bologna, Arena di Verona, Rossini Opera Festival e al Teatro San Carlo di Napoli. Il suo repertorio operistico conta oltre 70 titoli diversi già diretti che abbracciano secoli e spaziano dall'italiano al francese, tedesco, russo, inglese e contemporaneo. Nel 2022, ha ricevuto il prestigioso premio come "Best Conductor of the Year" agli International Opera Awards.
Nell’estate del 2025 Rustioni ha concluso dopo otto stagioni il suo mandato di Direttore Musicale dell'Opéra National de Lyon. Oltre a più di trenta titoli d'opera e numerosi concerti sinfonici diretti, Rustioni e l'Opéra de Lyon hanno effettuato tournée internazionali e si sono esibiti regolarmente al Théâtre des Champs-Elysées di Parigi, nonché al Festival International d’Art Lyrique di Aix-en-Provence, Berlioz Côte-Saint-André, La Chaise-Dieu e Chorégie d'Orange. Ha ricevuto l'onorificenza di "Chevalier des Arts et Lettres" della Repubblica Francese per la sua pluriennale attività di ambasciatore culturale, ed è stato nominato Direttore Musicale Emerito, il primo nella storia, del Teatro lionese.
La Metropolitan Opera House di New York è stata una parte importante dell’attività artistica di Rustioni fin dal suo debutto nel 2017 con Aida. Dal settembre 2025 è Direttore Ospite Principale del “Met”, solamente il terzo a ricoprire questa carica nella storia della leggendaria compagnia d’opera newyorkese dopo Valery Gergiev e Fabio Luisi. Recentemente ha diretto una nuova produzione di Carmen e un concerto sinfonico con l’orchestra del Met che ha segnato il suo debutto alla Carnegie Hall, oltre alle riprese di Falstaff, Le nozze di Figaro e una nuova produzione di Rigoletto. Nella stagione 2025-2026 dirigerà Don Giovanni, La bohème e Andrea Chènier (parte della serie di opere trasmesse “live HD” al cinema). Progetti futuri includono nuove produzioni operistiche, una creazione in prima assoluta e altri concerti sinfonici alla Carnegie Hall.
Dal 2021 al 2023 è stato il primo Direttore Ospite Principale della Bayerische Staatsoper di Monaco di Baviera, dove è stato invitato a dirigere due Akademische Konzerte con la Bayerische Staatsorchester, numerose opere di repertorio e nuove importanti produzioni operistiche, tra le quali spiccano Les Troyens, Aida e Cavalleria rusticana/Pagliacci.
Dal 2019 al 2024 è stato Direttore Musicale dell’Ulster Orchestra, che ha riposizionato nel firmamento delle orchestre del Regno Unito con registrazioni, tournée internazionali e concerti di successo ai BBC Proms.
È stato Direttore Ospite Principale dal 2011 al 2014, Direttore Principale dal 2014 al 2020 e Direttore Artistico fino a gennaio 2023 dell'Orchestra della Toscana a Firenze.
La sua discografia include un ampio repertorio per Deutsche Grammophon, Naxos, Opera Rara, Unitel, Opus Arte e Dynamic. Particolarmente significative le registrazioni monografiche dedicate alla riscoperta di alcuni compositori italiani del XXo Secolo per Sony Classical. Nel 2022, Naxos ha pubblicato il video/dvd de Il gallo d'oro di Rimskij-Korsakov, diretto da Barrie Kosky al Festival d’Aix-en-Provence con i complessi artistici dell’Opéra National de Lyon, mentre l’incisione più recente è stato il pluripremiato album di debutto discografico del mezzosoprano Aigul Akhmetshina per Decca.
Daniele Rustioni è nato a Milano e ha iniziato la sua carriera musicale nel 1993 come membro del coro di voci bianche del Teatro alla Scala. Ha studiato presso il Conservatorio “Giuseppe Verdi” della sua città conseguendo i diplomi in Organo, Pianoforte, Composizione Tradizionale e Direzione d’orchestra. Si è perfezionato come répétiteur/maestro di sala all’Accademia del Teatro alla Scala, e ha proseguito gli studi in direzione d’orchestra presso l'Accademia Musicale Chigiana di Siena (Diploma d’Onore) e la Royal Academy of Music di Londra.
